No Man's Access
A screen reader for No Man's Sky
About
A video game accessibility tool that uses computer vision to identify text and objects of interest, OCR to parse the content, and text-to-speech to read them aloud. Designed to make No Man's Sky playable for people with low vision.
As a visually impaired gamer, I built this tool to solve my own accessibility challenges with No Man's Sky. The game has no built-in screen reader support, making it difficult for players with low vision to read menus, inventory items, and in-game text.
How it works
- Computer vision detects UI elements and objects of interest
- OCR extracts text from the game screen
- Text-to-speech reads the content aloud
- Hotkey-triggered scanning for primary and secondary objects
Current Limitations
- Designed for low vision users; not yet suitable for users with no vision
- Requires Python and CUDA to run
- Manual hotkey activation required to scan for objects
- Windows only
Roadmap
- Remove GPU/CUDA dependency for broader hardware support
- Cross-platform support (Windows and Linux)
- Automatic detection to replace manual hotkey triggers
- Support for users with extremely low or no vision
